That’s Why God Made the Radio – A Slice of the 60’s Redux

The Beach Boys. 50th Anniversary

Summer of 2012 has been crafted under the guise of a new Beach Boy album – That’s Why Got Made the Radio.

While on past vacations at the OBX one of us in the group fixates on an old Beach Boys tune and things just chill.  It could be Wild Honey, or Kokomo, or Good Vibrations, or Fun, Fun, Fun on the iPod.

Well this summer it will be Beaches in Mind, Shelter or Pacific Coast Highway.  These are but three of the new tunes on the just released (June 5th) album that I have been listening to since iTunes fulfilled my pre-release order on Tuesday.

I am not a big Beach Boys fan.  Yet, I respect their catalog of work – its tough to beat them for the 60’s beach music scene they own, a niche they never let go of.  Their sound has recently been imitated by groups such as South Carolina’s The Explorer’s Club and pilloried by The Beatles on their White Album – in the song Back in the U.S.S.R..  Their music is an easy target.  Yet, no one does it better then them in 2012.

I have seen them three times since the early 70’s.  Always without Brian Wilson.  I don’t plan on seeing them perform this year – in what is being billed as their 50th Anniversary tour – but I won’t be without their music at the beach.

That’s Why God Made the Radio is Brian Wilson at the top of his game, singing, writing and producing their 60’s sound in a 2012 tech package distributed through iTunes.

Wow.  Turn up your car radio and just listen to the harmonies, listen to the clean musical arrangements, and the lyrics – well they are old school but for a good reason – it sells (ask Jimmy Buffett).

Dial up those pricey Bose car speakers – and let them perform as they were designed to with the songs like – Isn’t it Time and Day Break Over the Ocean.

In this album Brian Wilson and the Boys stay away from making political statements – unlike other recently new releases by old school artists (i.e. Springsteen, and Bonnie Raitt). However, Brian does show that he has rejoined us in the 21st Century by playing on America’s obsessive voyeurism in his island sound encrusted tune – The Private Life of Bill and Sue.  Then there is his – Strange World – that could easily describe a day in his life walking on the Santa Monica Pier.

It’s ok to go back – let Brian take you – let the harmonies carry you away to a time of sun, surf and sand.  That’s Why God Made the Radio.

Maryland My Maryland – Many slices of life events – one weekend

Maryland My Maryland – A Land of Pleasant Living

Ok, raise your hand.  Did you partake in the showcase that was happening in Maryland this weekend?  It showcased the best part of living and traveling in the Old Line State triangle between Baltimore, Frederick and the DC suburbs in Maryland.  Oh, and the weather – spectacular for all to enjoy.

Let’s get this started – here goes – just raise your hand if you watched, read about or partook in any of these events.

1)   Joint Services Open House – Andrews Air Show – Andrews, MD

2)   Baseball’s Battle of the Beltways – as played out at Nationals Stadium

3)   G-8 Conference at Camp David – near Thurmont MD

4)   Gaithersburg Book Festival – at City Hall in Gaithersburg, MD

5)   The Preakness – Baltimore MD

6)   Maryland against John Hopkins in a NCAA Semi-Final Lacrosse match  – Navy Stadium in Annapolis, MD

7)   Graduation at the University of Maryland – College Park, MD

8)   Potomac Steeplechase – Poolesville, MD

9)   Wine in the Woods – Columbia, MD

10) Lady AnteBELLum concert – at Merriweather Post Pavilion – Columbia, MD

That is one massive list for activity within a three-day span and I am sure there were other events such as yard sales, 10k’s and doggy walks.

What makes this area so special is that it lives and breathes between the international and national spotlight and meanwhile to coin an old National Bohemian (Natty Boh) beer phrase this all happens locally in the Land of Pleasant Living.

Friday, May 18th – this day is without a doubt the busiest “prom night” of the 2012 high school season – across all metro areas.  I know I took it off (from being a paparazzi) to go watch the Baltimore Orioles combat the Washington Nationals for the first of three games.  That venue drew over 120,000 local Baltimore/Washington fans over this past weekend.  However, it paled in comparison to the events at the Bolger Center in Potomac – where Winston Churchill, The Heights and Bullis simultaneously held their proms.  I bet you couldn’t find a limo in all of MoCo – they had to be way too busy shuttling up and down Democracy Boulevard. Lastly, the G-8 Conference, a gathering of the heads of state from the worlds largest economies met at Camp David, MD

Saturday, May 19th  – a brilliantly sunny day started off in Gaithersburg for the third annual Book Festival.  Over 120 nationally and locally recognized authors converged on the City Hall grounds to speak or participate in panels over a 7-hour period to crowded tents filled with adults and children.

Book Festival

Strange Case of the Origami Yoda

The day’s events quickly switched to Annapolis, MD where the Blues Jays of John Hopkins took on the Terrapins from Maryland in the states biggest matchup of lacrosse powerhouses for a trip to the NCAA Final Four.  My Terps won.  A little father south and east down the road the Andrews Air Show was getting underway for what would be a two-day showcase of aerial and ground displays.   Meanwhile in Northeast Baltimore horse racings elite gathered at Pimlico Race Course for the 137th Preakness Stakes.  I’ll Have Another won the second leg of the Triple Crown on Saturday and is now resting in NYC awaiting the last leg at the Belmont Stakes.  In DC, the Orioles beat the Nats 6 to 5.  Let’s not forget the G-8 conference was still going on and all those protestors who blocked the streets in downtown Thurmont were really in line for the Mountain Gate Family Restaurant.  Oh, and if I missed your wedding or Saturday evening party – please excuse me – I did not know – I will take it up with the folks MCM and see if we can get your announcements up, next year.

Sunday, May 20th – three for three spectacular days in the Mid-Atlantic.  The G-8 conference broke up, everyone went home – or did they?  If they stuck around they could have seen the Potomac Steeplechase in Poolesville, MD.   Or maybe they stopped by the Comcast Center to listen to John Barry (UMD class of 1980) of the Office of Personnel Management give a commencement speech to the 2012 University of Maryland graduates.  Meanwhile Nats pitcher Steven Strasburg did his best imitation of the Great Walter Johnson and hit a home to lead a turnaround for a Nats win over the O’s.  I saw none of those things – instead I headed to Columbia MD where to my surprise the Wine in the Woods Festival was finishing up on the grounds of Merriweather Post Pavilion.  My wife, four friends and I were there to see the Lady AnteBELLum Own the Nighttour featuring of course Lady A and Thompson Square along with Darius Rucker.  Merriweather is the Grand Dame of outside musical venues in all of the Mid-Atlantic and last night it again proved why on this starry night.  Unlike Saturday night when the Drive-By-Truckers and Lucinda Williams hardly sold out the cheap seats – Lady A with a great act sold out the place and left it rocking.  Many in the crowd were there to see former Hootie & The Blowfish lead singer Darius Rucker and his country band.

Waiting for Lady A

Darius knew the crowd having played Merriweather many times before and borrowed from his former group and Rockville MD members a number of Hootie classics.  But it was Lady A who owned the night – in typical Nashville fashion they quickly transitioned between songs flawlessly keeping the crowd dancing all night.  Hey, I even thought I saw blonde Angela Merkle (Chancellor of Germany) look-a-like in cowboy boots dancing at the end of the show.

Thankfully the rain held off till Monday morning preserving this Maryland My Maryland weekend in the Land of Pleasant Living.

It is Why we RIDE

May 17, 2012

Tomorrow is Bike to Work Day (B2WD).

There are many reasons why some of us continue to ride after B2WD.  Some for the exercise, some to be more environmentally conscious, others to save gas, some just to relax, others because there is no other way to and from work or play and then some of us have totally different reasons to ride.

I ride for most of the reasons above.  Now, I ride for one more.

Last year I found a reason to ride and came about it in a totally unexpected way.  It was early June and I had thoughts of trying to run my 7th marathon, the Marine Corp, when I broke my foot.  About the same time, I was covering an assignment about a cycling group out of North Potomac called RIDE Allegheny.  This group of about 40 cyclists sponsors an October four-day, 300-mile charity benefit ride between Pittsburgh, PA and Darnestown, MD.  The ride transverses the Great Allegheny Passage Trail and connects with the C&O National Park Trail in Cumberland, MD.  I was game to ride especially since my friend and foot doctor Steve, told me I could cycle without causing further damage but not run until August.

Over the 2011 summer of exercising and group rides I learned why the RIDE Allegheny tour group rode – it was to support a non-profit group called Operation Second Chance (OSC).  OSC is comprised of patriotic citizens committed to serving our wounded, injured and ill combat veterans. They support veterans and their families while they recover in military hospitals, primarily at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda.

The charity benefit angle was to raise $150,000 for OSC.  Every rider has a goal and riders find sponsors or use their talents to raise funds.  I did a photography benefit and far exceeded the “newbie” goal.

So this year the goal is $175,000 – and last Friday evening I did a photographic benefit once again to raise funds.  With the help of my compatriots at RIDE Allegheny and Pinky & Pepe’s Grape Escape in the Kentlands we sponsored, Pet Photography for OSC Night.  That evening about 400 patrons visited Pinky & Pepe’s and no one was more happier to be in the crowd than wounded warrior USMC L.Cpl. Caleb Getscher.  He is seen here with a new friend, Bently.

Lauderdale Air Show – Going back in time

My wife and I were in Ft. Lauderdale FL this past weekend to attend a friend of family wedding. It occurred on the same weekend, April 28th as the Lauderdale Air Show. The Air Show had been postponed for 5 years due to financial issues. Those in the South Florida community appeared to be ready for this revival Air Show weekend.

The good part to the Lauderdale Air Show is the practice runs – which started on Thursday, April 26 and went to Friday, the 27th. Both days were picture perfect. We were staying at The Westin on A1A and the performance was over a stretch of the Atlantic beach along the Lauderdale waterfront. Most displays as some point flew in front of or over Westin or the nearby W. I was able to pull out some shots with my 120mm lens but I was ill equipped to get close enough to make out the details of the planes.

But I was able to get some framed shots that gives you a flavor for the event. I decided to color most of the following photos in a vintage filter to give them a tropical setting – reminiscent of a WWII setting. I also used the filters due to the Saturday, April 28th overcast sky.

Here are a few of my favorites from that slice of time.
