MD Terps Women’s BBall – Feature

Maryland Women’s Basketball – Slice of St. Joe’s

Tianna Hawkins

Tianna Hawkins, Junior looking for a rebound

I am shooting stills for an associate TV producer of UnderTheShell TV – a production of the Maryland Woman’s Basketball team. My first opportunity to do so in this 2011-2012 season was at the Comcast Center against opponent Saint Joseph’s of Philadelphia (on the Main Line). I will be shooting occasionally depending on schedules this season.

Already, I have singled out my favorite Terp member for 2012, it is Tianna Hawkins, a Junior, Forward. I don’t mean to disappoint the other 11 players, who I will eventually highlight, it is just that Tianna has this particular smile of joy when she is on the court. I find it infectious.

So stay tuned to this section of my PhotoLoaf blog as I take a slice of life view of the Women Terp’s BBall progress.

A Friday Night Lights Slice of Football Spirit

Winning Field Goal - 7.3 Seconds

>> #3 Quince Orchard 23 to 21 over #15 Churchill – November 18, 2011

Sometimes the football gods are not fair. So would think those from Potomac, MD who support the Winston Churchill football program.

Churchill has a very good, Metro Area ranked high school 2011 football team. The program is rebuilding and though they may lose core seniors – it is only up for them. They played exceptionally error free football against the #3 Metro DC Area Quince Orchard Cougars and fell short by 2 points when QO’s Chris McPherson kicked a 24 yard field goal with 7.3 seconds remaining. At that point QO moved onto the State semi-finals. For the Churchill’s seniors, they suddenly left the season all on the field at that slice of life moment.

This year Churchill rediscovered football school spirit – in a student body that considers themselves first and foremost the “real-life 90210” model school. For those reading this blog – lookup the genesis of that teen throb TV program – and you will figure out what I mean.

After an early Saturday morning run on the C&O Canal from Old Anglers the day after the game I stopped by the Potomac Starbucks for a quick breakfast. In line was a Churchill student in a Lacrosse jacket. I chatted her up about the prior evening’s game – she felt sadden at the loss and yet proud of the team’s effort and the tremendous out pouring of support at the game.

In the one defining moment during this brief conversation she said sadly – “that we lead the entire game and lost it in the last 7 seconds”. I told her that I had photographed the game (over 1200 jpegs) from the sidelines. So rather than challenge her game-time memory, where it was a tied at half time and had three 2nd half lead changes – I kept quiet.

The football gods are fair. The spirit pixie dust they sprinkled on Churchill all season lasts beyond that final 7.3-second slice of life moment.

A Slice of Life Moment

Every now and then you come across a scenic slice of life that you can’t resist. Just walking through the neighborhood can bring up the unexpected photo opportunity.

San Diego – May 2011

San Diego – Slice of Life from April 30th to May 5th 2011

I just love this city.

Been here many times for business in the past and have traveled north up as far as Torrey Pines. I always stay down near the Convention Center / Gas Light District because it is walk-able. Plus PETCO Park is right here. It’s a lot like Baltimore – which I feel influenced San Diego’s revitalization.

This was my last postal forum – look it up if you really want to know what that is – it does not matter – just know it was held near the convention center.

I have brought my camera’s many times but on these dates I had a little more time to go into different parts of the city and areas nearby. I finally found Little Italy.

PhotoLoaf blog – as you read back – features many ‘Italian’ ethnic enclaves – perhaps I am a bit biased but boy oh boy – the architecture and the food surrounding these enclaves is picture perfect.

Especially noteworthy to me is San Diego’s Little Italy section during the Art Festival. I had the great fortune to be there on Sunday May1 to capture most of my photos. Friends took me out to dinner there the night before.

San Diego is very much a Naval town, so I was able to click away at the city from a variety of water venues. My last evening was spent on Coronado Island – home to the Navy Seals – and I was able to capture the waterfront from there. Also I was able to photograph the USS Midway as fireworks exploded in the evening sky. Today the Midway is a naval museum.

As I write this blog on Veterans Day (11-11-11) I am reminded of my stay in San Diego when the national media reported on OBL’s (see the photo of USA Today) death and the role of those Navy Seals (supposedly from VA Beach area).

The forum was a RED, WHITE and BLUE event – preplanned with tributes to the Armed Services so – it seemed so coincidental with the venue and the world events.

So I used my down time away from the forum and after forum glad-handing to find my way over to PETCO (for 3 games) to watch the Padres. I passed memorials to MLK, street vendors, trolley cars and trains – people walking – all in this very vibrant part of the city.
